A first step for tomorrow's entrepreneurs - Dundee Chamber Winter 2011
People, and their performance, are of uppermost concern at The Enterprise Gym. TEG, as it’s known to insiders is a small, independent unit at the University of Dundee formed to help develop student self-reliance and employability. It is the embodiment of a partnership between the University and Tayside business people committed to helping produce graduates who are more enterprising and business-ready.
This is achieved through a number of structured and semi-structured flexible programmes aimed at developing business enterprise and entrepreneurship skills. Most importantly, all of these activities are undertaken on an extra curricular basis. TEG is open and free to all students, but only those who can spot an “opportunity” and have the drive and stamina to follow it through after a busy day of classes should apply. All teaching is delivered by faculty comprising dedicated senior business people and entrepreneurs. In this way, the “can do” attitude that marks out successful businesspeople and that employers look for rubs off on to the students. Our message is simple – by becoming more entrepreneurial and commercially aware in your outlook, you become more employable. These skills also benefit students in a wider social context.
All of TEG’s accredited and non-accredited programmes are certificated. This approach allows students to differentiate themselves from other graduates and provides an extra opportunity to impress prospective employers.
It goes without saying that TEG couldn’t perform without the support of our business partners, who give of their time so generously and who are too numerous to mention individually. You know who you are and we thank you for your invaluable support.
But we are always looking to form new partnerships with the people who have the ability to make a real difference to the lives and prospects of our students. If you feel you could help us develop the next generation of business leaders please do not hesitate to contact us. It is our business partners who enable students to achieve their aim of “exercising business creativity” whilst also making contact with the best, sharpest and most driven graduates who they might look to recruit.
Remember, if you are recruiting a University of Dundee graduate, check to see if they have “The Enterprise Gym” on their CV. If they do, then rest assured this candidate has something extra to offer.
